Located in Monroe County, the Borough of East Stroudsburg was first incorporated in 1870. About 10,000 people call this 2.9 square mile borough home. Originally known as “Dansbury,” the area was renamed East Stroudsburg when the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad opened a station in the town.
East Stroudsburg was first settled in 1737 by Daniel Brodhead. His homestead stood on the site now occupied by The Pocono Hospital Complex. This small settlement eventually grew into a large frontier community. On December 11, 1755, the Brodhead settlement was attacked by 200 Indians. For more than eight hours the family fought for their lives. All of their outbuildings and barns were burned. Even though the small settlement was devastated, the area eventually grew into a small, but thriving town. When the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad began operating the town began to be called East Stroudsburg.
Many municipal park facilities are owned by the Borough of East Stroudsburg for its citizens’ use. These facilities provide a range of recreational opportunities for the citizens of the Borough, with activities available for all ages. Dansbury Park features a public Swimming Pool and houses the Borough’s summer programs. Other park properties include Zacharias Pond Park, Gregory’s Pond Park and Miller Park. The Borough recently acquired the Terra Greens golf course property, and the Van D. Yetter Park property along the Brodhead Creek. The Loder Building, operated by the Monroe County Office on Aging, is a senior citizen center for area residents.
