Located in Monroe County, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania is located in the Poconos region of the state. The county seat of Monroe County, Stroudsburg is located about five miles from the Delaware Water Gap, near the confluence of the Brodhead and Pocono creeks. About 6,000 people call the Pocono paradise of Stroudsburg home, many of whom commute to work.
The first Europeans settled the Stroudsburg area in 1730. Peter LeBar built the first log home in that year, and it stood where 9th and Main Streets now meet (the home no longer stands). Fortifications to defend the fledgling settlement shortly followed. In 1756, Fort Hamilton was built. Jacob Stroud settled here in 1760 and built a stockade around his large stone house. The stockade would later be known as Fort Penn.
Daniel Stroud, founder of Stroudsburg, was born at Fort Penn on May 22, 1772. Having been schooled in Philadelphia and passing the bar at age 21, Stroud married Elizabeth Shoemaker. Their home was one of the first in the village, and is now the site of the Monroe County Historical Society. Jacob Stroud, father of Daniel, only decades prior had sold lots in the village and started the development that would be named for his family. He died before he could see his dream come true. Daniel inherited the land and founded the borough of Stroudsburg in 1810. The first newspaper, The Stroudsburg Gazette, started publishing in 1832. Stroudsburg was named the county seat in 1836 and the first session of court was held the same year. The borough was incorporated in 1837 and the Stroudsburg bank opened in 1857.
